Welcome
The Bridge Detroit is proof that when you have a dream and the audacity to take God at His Word, all things are possible.

During the winter of 2002 Buck and Tonya Buchanan led a team of volunteers from their church, supplying a hot meal, clean clothes, a shower, and groceries to those that were in need. They adopted the motto "We may not be able to give people everything they need, but, no matter what, they will leave better than when they came here!" We also learned one very important rule; when it comes to doing Kingdom work, denominational walls will fall. For over two years Buck and Tonya ministered in that community. The impact of those years there are still being felt. Then in 2004, due to Michigan's changing economy, Buck was forced to change careers and subsequently step away from the ministry to the needy. Over the next three years, while establishing himself in a new career, he was witnessing first hand the devastating effects that the changing economy was, and still is, having on the families and people of the Detroit Metropolitan area. During those three years they learned about the power of a dream. Pursuing the God given passions of their hearts, they learned about attitude and the affect it can have on every area of one's life. But perhaps the biggest lesson they learned, was perseverance. Don't ever give up, because you cannot be defeated if you aren't willing to quit!

In 2007, after years of praying, prayers were answered. God made it possible for them to work with a longtime friend and mentor; Pastor Darius Walden. Shortly after beginning their work with Pastor Darius, they began to notice the people that God started to bring into their lives. People of vision. People who believed in chasing dreams and working hard to see them come to fruition. People with the courage to face their fears and to strive to live the abundant life that Jesus talked about. Most of all they were learning that the people who make a difference in your life, are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards, they are the ones that care.

The idea of feeding, clothing, and worshiping with people under a bridge was not an unwelcome thought. Following the old adage: "If you want to be a success, find someone that is already successful in doing what you want to do, and do what they did." Buck began to research other Ministries who had already reached a level of success to better understand how he could immediately be effective in serving Detroit and it's surrounding communities.

Then one Sunday evening in July of 2008, Buck begin sharing at his home church, his current vision for the Detroit area and unfolded the concept of the Bridge Ministry. That same evening he announced its projected launch to be later that fall.

Currently in 2009, The Bridge Detroit is striving to build personal relationships with every homeless and needy person in Detroit, through meeting them where they live to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual fulfillment. Truly helping Detroit to build bridges that span the chasms caused by sin, hopelessness and poverty. When we look at our own lives, it isn't important whether we help the homeless. The important thing is that we recognize whom God has put on our doorstep, and minister to them. It's not just a ministry to the homeless that is important. It is spending time doing what God wants us to do.

As the Bridge Detroit begins to bloom in to the ministry that is so relevant and needed for this time, we are constantly looking for others to become more involved. We currently utilize volunteers from various churches throughout the Metropolitan area. However; we need more. The more people we serve, the more we need resources. More than ever we are in need of financial contributions. People often ask; why money? Well, with your financial contributions we are able to have funds to fill the gaps in our weekly menu of food we serve, funds for bus passes, to fulfill natural emergencies from needy families, to better provide items for the homeless that we do not receive from other contributions. Go the 'Get Involved' page or contact us and we will let you know how you can be a part of this outreach ministry.
